What is this Energy Genie all about?

The Energy Genie comes in two versions, The Basic and The Premier. There are differences between the two, but before we can talk to you about what the Energy Genie can do for you, you first need to understand how you are being billed by the power company.

Here's how they do it.

Whenever someone moves into a home, condo, apartment, etc. they always need to contact the local power company to have their service turned on. When they do this, the customer service rep at the power company automatically puts you on their flat rate billing program. In the Dominion Power service area, this is known as "Schedule 1". This means that you are billed at the same rate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Did you know that there are other rate plans that you can be on that just may be less expensive than Schedule 1? There is. However, going to a different plan adds some additional billing aspects to your bill.

Flat rate plans bill you primarily for the amount of "energy" you use. This energy is measured in kilo Watt hours or kWh's. So, the longer you keep a light bulb on the more kWh's you use. One of the different rate plans offered by the power company is "Schedule 1S", also know as the Time-of-Use or TOU plan. This plan was put into place to help save the power company money. That's right, I said the power company. Here's how this works.

In a TOU rate plan, there are on-peak and off-peak hours of the day. During the on-peak hours of the day, the power company wants you to use less electricity. If you are willing to do so, then they will sell you electricity during the off-peak periods at a sizable discount. Why? If the power company can remove usage during the peak load times to the time of day when the generation plants are not working as hard, then they can defer having to build new plants and transport facilities. That saves them millions upon millions of dollars.

Sounds good so far, right? Here's the catch. This TOU rate has a new line item in the bill that flat rate users do not have and that is called "demand". What is demand? It is the total amount of energy service that you need at any given point in time. For example, if your A/C system, your water heater and your dryer are all on at the same time, then your need for energy or your demand for energy is high. This is measured in Kilo Watts or KW. One KW is equal to 1,000 watts of energy. So ten 100 watt light bulbs that are all on at the same time are pulling (using) 1,000 watts or 1 KW. A typical A/C system needs about 5 KW, a water heater about 4KW, a dryer about 7KW. So that's 16 KW of service. If all of these items are on at the same time during any on-peak period, then the power company will bill you for the ENTIRE MONTH based upon that one time. Doesn't sound like such a good deal now, huh?

Here comes our product. We'll provide and install The Energy Genie in your home. It manages the demand in your home so that the power company will not bill you for high demand charges. By reducing the demand charges, we have leveled the playing field for TOU billing. Now the customer can take advantage of the lower off peak rates which help reduce their bill each and every month and we have accomplished what the power company wants and needs you to do. In addition, we have all just become good stewards of the environment, something that we strongly believe in.

Basic or Premier?

So just how do we manage your demand? Good question! We have two systems that we provide to residential users. They are the Energy Genie Basic and The Energy Genie Premier. The basic system is designed for homes with just a few high energy loads. Typically a single HVAC, water heater, clothes dryer, electric stove. This is the standard 3 bedroom 2 bath home throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The basic can capture about 80 to 85 percent of the potential savings in this type of home. These homes have an average monthly billing of less than $140 per month. Our typical customer sees a return-on-investment (ROI) in about 14 months, although some have seen as little as 6 months.

The Energy Genie Premier is for larger homes with multiple HVAC systems/zones, water heater(s), dryer(s), pool, hot tub, etc. The Premier system is designed to capture 100% of the potential savings from a home. These larger homes have electrical bills greater than $140 per month. Our larger home customers see an ROI of around 18 to 24 months.

It's time that you stop sending YOUR money to the power company. Let's get that money back into the pockets of the people that can use it the most You!
